One technique is holding your opponent by setting up a blockade on the backgammon board. You can do this by covering multiple points in a row with 2 or more backgammon checkers.

The holding strategy may force your opponent to skip a turn or two if he can’t roll numbers high than the number of blockades you’ve built. Often advanced players will build a blockade of covered points right in their opponent’s home board. This makes life very difficult for your opponents when he or she is knocked off the backgammon board and trying to get back on it.

Another advanced technique is to strike or blitz as many of your opponents open pieces as possible. Unless you are rolling a lot of doubles you will also leave your own backgammon checkers exposed in an offensive attack, which means your opponent could also land on you and knock you off the backgammon board. The strike strategy is only recommended is your opponent’s piece is relatively isolated and doesn’t leave you in close proximity of his or her other checkers that may land on you after a backgammon strike.
